  107. clock in a small window. It has intentionally few features. It displays the

  110. minute, respecting the time format you have set in your control panels. It
  111. doesn't display
  112. seconds or the date or ring chimes or display movies or pictures or
  113. animations.

  127. downloaded from a Current Contents database either into a format (Refer/BibIX)

  165. Disk Charmer 2.1.x is a neat utility that lets you conveniently
  166. initialize (or verify) floppy disks.
  167. It _requires_ at least System 7 to run.
  168. It has a nice, modeless interface.
  169. Help Balloons are everywhere.
  170. It supports drag&drop (with the required Apple Events).
  171. It is able to create larger disks: you gain 8.5K on a 800K disk,
  172. 18.5K on a HD disk (if you keep one large file filling the disk,
  173. such as a Compact Pro segment).
  174. It is the first disk formatter supporting the handy "Undo" feature
  175. we all know and love.
  176. It is the first disk formatter able to initialize and verify disks
  177. (hold your breath) **in background**. To access this feature, you need
  178. the Thread Manager Extension from Apple Computer.
  179. It has even more features... but I am sure you are already impressed!
  180.  
  181. New from version 2.1:
  182. A wonderful and subtle bug lurked in the code I wrote to allow the
  183. marvelous additions in 2.1. This could cause subtle hangs while
  184. Disk Charmer was creating the disk catalog.

  208. FastTracker... "the lightning-fast way to find a bolo game"

  210. I wrote this in about a day as a quick method for finding Bolo games. With
  211. just a keystroke, you can find a list of current games on the internet;
  212. with another, you can launch Bolo with the game information on the Clipboard.
  213.  
  214. Just type Cmd-Shift-5 from any program, including the Bolo startup dialog.
  215. The FastTracker dialog will come up and give you the latest information.
  216. (Remember, you need MacTCP to use FastTracker, or to play Internet Bolo).
  217.

  233. that I uploaded some days ago. So here we go again.

  235. A File Identifier, FIID, is a file that substitutes an application you
  236. don't have so that a file created by the missing application is presented
  237. with it's right icon and file type information in Finder.
  238.  
  239. File_Identifiers.sit contains a short instruction on how to make File
  240. Identifiers and also a few readymade FIID's and dummy files to show how
  241. they work.

  276. This version of Galactic Empire fixes a couple of bugs present in both
  277. versions 2.0 and 2.01.  Also, you can now decommission troops instead
  278. of scrapping them (or, if you want to, move troops fromone planet to
  279. another).  There are also a few interface enhancements, such as being
  280. able to use the "escape" key to cancel most of the dialogs, and you
  281. can now select planets in the Galactic Map window by clicking on their
  282. names as well as the planet itself.
  283.  
  284. Galactic Empire:  You are asked to unite the twenty planets of the
  285. galaxy, by force, before civilization decays.  You can utilize planetary
  286. resources to build fighters, spy satellites, and transports, recruit
  287. soldiers for ground forces, raise money for ship construction, and
  288. produce the fuel and supplies your fleet needs.  Planets have varying
  289. technology levels and populations, and you can determine how best to
  290. allocate their resources.  Time is limited (one only lives for so long),
  291. so plan carefully.

  680. low-end color monitors.  The most recent review is in the August 1993
  681. MacUser, "Color for Less", pp. 120-130. The following 14"-15" monitors
  682. were reviewed (Number of mice, out of a maximum of 5, in parentheses):
  683. Apple Macintosh Color Display (4.0), Apple Performa Display (2.0), Apple

  860. I just finished formating the last of a batch of 50 HD diskettes I bought
  861. >From MEI-Micro Center. They all formatted properly, as did the 25 I bought
  862. a couple of months ago. All 75 were PC-grade diskettes, and cost 9 cents
  863. less than the Mac-grade diskettes they offer.

  865. Which makes me wonder, is there really any difference in the PC-grae and
  866. Mac-grade diskettes which MEI sells, or is this an example of what
  867. economists call price discrimination. I know of no one else who makes
  868. a PC/Mac distinction with diskettes. When I ordered the first batch of
  869. PC-grade diskettes from MEI, the saleslady protested and told me I could
  870. not do that. (I am in their database as a Mac user.) I asked if the Mac
  871. grade was a higher quality. She said, "No," but said it was different.
  872. Only vagueness followed.

  874. If a seller can in some way divide its customers into groups by their
  875. willingness to pay, sos that it separates those who will pay more from those
  876. who are more sensitive to price, it can increase profit.. (This is what
  877. economists call price discrimination.) Here is an hypothsis: MEI discovered
  878. that Mac owners are willing to pay more for computer-related items than PC
  879. owners. Upon discovering this, they invented a way to make a distinction
  880. between essentially identical diskettes, and then charge by willingness to
  881. pay. Can you disprove this hypothesis? Have you found any differences in
  882. the PC-grade and Mac-grade diskettes? Or should all Mac users do what I
  883. do when buying from MEI, buy the PC-grade diskettes?
  884.  
  885. (MEI offers great prices--for example, their laser labels are much cheaper
  886. than Avery's. Unfortunately, many of their items, such as CD-ROMs, mice,
  887. and keyboards, exist only for DOS users. Does anyone know if any seller

  927. I'm a college student whos owns a Centris 660AV and a GeoPort. In response
  928. to your questions concerning this wonderful piece of hardware, I would
  929. suggest investing in it.
  930. Question #1) I have made reilable and speedy connections with the GeoPort
  931. at 14.4kps V.42.bis. I set my communications program to 19,200kps and it
  932. works great! I'm not sure what comm program you use, but I would
  933. reccommend White Knight 11.12 or one that has Z-modem file transfer.
  934.  
  935. Question#2) If you are referring to the speakerphone capabilities, I would
  936. say that you might want to turn up your volume in the Sound Control Panel
  937. to somewhere in the middle. Using Apple Phone, which is located in a
  938. folder "Apple Extras" our your AV's HD, you can manipulate the volume even
  939. higher. Modem connections are fine, and I haven't used the fax yet, but I
  940. know that you can only use the GeoPort for one of these functions at a time.
  941.  
  942. Question#3) The GeoPort utilizes the modem/GeoPort port on the back of
  943. your machine, so the video functions aren't bothered. In regards to the
  944. sound, you have to have the Options in the Sound Control Panel/ Sound
  945. Input on Microphone w/ no playback to use the microphone. If you don't
  946. have a CD-ROM drive, don't worry abot this, since the microphone will be
  947. the default setting.
  948.  
  949. Question#4) I'm not sure what will become of the GeoPort after the release
  950. of the PowerPC, but why worry about it now. You have a machine that has
  951. some of the features that will come standard with the PowerPC macs.

  974.  When I want to get files off the internet to a PC, I use the binary mode,
  975.  download to the mainframe, then download to a PC.  The file is usually in
  976.  a ZIP format.  I then use a PKUNZIP program (which self-extracts) to get
  977.  to the contents of the ZIP file.  Another common PC archiver is the ARJ.
  978.  
  979.  Now, I find myself in need of some experts to teach me about how to get
  980.  files for the MAC.  I'd have to do the same thing as before:
  981.   -get the file off the net using FTP to a unix based mainframe.
  982.   -get the file off the mainframe to a PC, with another FTP
  983.   -get the file off the PC to a floppy using the DOS copy command
  984.   -get the file to the MAC by putting the floppy into the drive, and
  985.  dragging the file to a folder on the HD.
  986. or in really simple terms: INTERNET->MAINFRAME->IBM PC->MAC IIsi
  987.  
  988.  the mac that I use has a program on it that recognizes a PC floppy, but I
  989.  think it recognizes all the files on the floppy as being IBM PC files,
  990.  instead of MAC files.  Still, I can load up GIFs and other picture formats
  991.  off of my PC disks.

  993.  When I went to the FTP place to get the mac files, I was unpleasantly
  994.  surprised to find out that MACS also have their own archiving format.  I
  995.  properly downloaded .hqx files using the ascii mode as I was instructed,
  996.  and compiled MCVERT on the mainframe, to convert them to MacBinary, and
  997.  took them to the mac, but it didn't like them.  They were "simple" gif
  998.  files, and the program that I use to view them with (adobe photoshop) gave
  999.  me an aerror message saying it didn't recognize the header or
  1000.  something like that... which means they didn't convert properly or
  1001.  something.

  1161. As far as I can tell, neither program can print Japanese
  1162. text "vertically," that is, top to bottom instead of right to
  1163. left or left to right.  In Japanese it is called "tategaki" and
  1164. it is a very common form of writing Japanese (also Chinese,
  1165. I believe).

  1352. but if you have the US keyboard installed, too,

  1389. I thought about steno the first time I heard about graph pads (long
  1390. before Newton): the basic problem seems to be that modern forms of
  1391. it (following Gabelsberg, in English I think Pitman) rely on pressure.
  1392. I don't think graph pads are yet very good on it. (But I may be wrong,
  1393. this could probably be included).
  1394. This may be overcome by different forms of stenography (there are historical
  1395. examples). Even limited steno could help: recognizing a 'longhand' steno
  1396. would already be helpful (accepting radically simplified letters and a few
  1397. shorthand abbreviations).
  1398. Another problem remains: even if you get transcript to letter text it is
  1399. much more ambiguous than standard writing. You may accept that or you need
  1400. a system which has at least limited capability of natural language
  1401. understanding. Court and parliamentary stenographers are asked to transcribe
  1402. their text immediately after the session! (although they can in most cases
  1403. read their text later with similar ease).
  1404. This is a problem
  1405. even more for Newton which is localized: it has separate versions
  1406. for English, French, German ... (and none for exotic languages).
  1407. Newton is no good before it speaks at least English _and_ German
  1408. (in my case). But I would also like to write passages in French, Greek,
  1409. Russian (I am studying chinese by now, but one should not be too
  1410. ambitious for a machine).

  1422. I have been experiencing some rather odd behavior from my Mac lately. All
  1423. MS Word documents I have created with the last week seem to have sizes that
  1424. are powers of 2. If the files real size is 22,345 bytes or such it will be
  1425. 32k on disk. This example is typical of all MS Word text files I create. It
  1426. also applies to other text files I create and save. For instance, when I
  1427. saves this file a second ago it said it was 534 bytes, 8k on disk.

  1483. I have just purchased a Quadra 605 to replace my LCII.  I have an
  1484. external LaCie 40M ZFP hard disk that was attached to the LCII (and an
  1485. SE before that).  When I attach the external hard disk to the 605,
  1486. the 605 will not boot.  Sometimes it will get as far as the "Welcome
  1487. to Macintosh" banner, but usually the boot process stops at the happy
  1488. mac face that is displayed when the mac finds the boot code.  If I
  1489. disable the processor cache and then attach the external drive, the
  1490. 605 will boot, and the drive is recognized and mounted.  If I attach
  1491. the external disk back to the LCII, it works fine.  When the processor
  1492. cache is enabled and the drive is attached to the 605, the mac
  1493. just hangs, regardless of whether the external disk is powered on
  1494. or not.  Yes, that's right, the 605 still hangs during the boot even
  1495. if the external hard disk is switched off.  Thinking that perhaps I
  1496. had a bad 605, I took the external hard disk to the Apple dealer and
  1497. attached it to the demo 605 that they have.  Same problem, but not as
  1498. frequently.  I put a terminator on the external disk, even though the
  1499. documentation says that is not necessary, but it does not help.  I
  1500. called LaCie technical support and Apple technical support.  Apple
  1501. says the disk might be too slow (it is about 3-4 years old) for the
  1502. fast processor of the 605.  LaCie says maybe a bad cable, but they
  1503. seemed stumped.  System 7.1 is installed on the internal disk, and
  1504. the external disk is formatted and empty.  Any ideas or suggestions?

  1668.     After 5 years of religiously rebuilding my desktop, running Norton Disk
  1669. Doctor and Disk First Aid every 2 weeks whether I need to or not, always using
  1670. the latest system software, and optimizing with Norton Speed Disk every once
  1671. in
  1672. a while, *it* happened: Disk Doctor reported it couldn't fix something, and
  1673. Disk First Aid (the "good" one - v7.2) didn't even know anything was wrong!
  1674.  
  1675.     I couldn't believe that I would actually, finally, have to back up my
  1676.     drive
  1677. and reformat it.  Even through all the lousy shareware, fancy network
  1678. software,
  1679. and just plain dumb stuff, Norton and Disk First Aid always came through.
  1680. Running it every few weeks often found bad data structures that appeared for
  1681. apparently no good reason, and I'm convinced that doing this, instead of
  1682. waiting for bad symptoms to appear, is why it took 5 years to come to this.

  1684.     So, in a panic (not really - I did have a backup :-), I called Symantec
  1685. support, and got the infinitely patient Mike on the line.  *One hour* of disk
  1686. editing later, my data structures were healthy, and I had saved several hours
  1687. of backing up, reformatting, and restoring my drive.  So the saga continues -
  1688. 5
  1689. years with no reformatting and still going.  It must be some kind of record,
  1690. especially the way I treat my disk.  Thank you Symantec, Peter Norton, and

  1701. Symantec Anti-Virus must load before all extensions or else you will get a
  1702. box saying it could not load the Virus Definitions file.

  1704. I installed the Symbionts extension when I got it with the MacWarehouse Power
  1705. Users Tool Kit 19.  When PUTK 20 came in recently, I installed the Symbionts
  1706. control panel.  Now Symbionts insists on being the first to load.  The control
  1707. panel has no obvious way to rearrange the order in which extensions load.
  1708. I've checked the naming of the extensions and SAM is ahead of Symbionts in the
  1709. Extensions folder.
  1710.  
  1711. Anybody got a solution?  Is there something I missed in the Read Me file?

  1735. For the some of those people on the net asking;

  1737.     Yes, there is a free Unix for Mac.  Actually, there are several.
  1738. The first is from Berkeley (I think at lilac.berkeley.edu).  A converted
  1739. version of NetBSD.  It only supports certain Mac models right now, more to
  1740. come.  It does not run on top of a Mac system.  It totally takes over the
  1741. Mac.
  1742.     The other, I think its Unix, is a converted version of Mint form, I
  1743. think Atari.  It's called MacMint, and it runs on top of Mac OS, like
  1744. MachTen does.  It is a real OS, with it's own memory management and so on.
  1745.     These two are the only systems that I know of.  There might be
  1746. more.  Also, please do not quote me on any of this.  I could be flat out
  1747. wrong.  However, I doubt it.
